This 2-day, 1-night journey through the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama offers a well-balanced experience of coastal scenery, cultural heritage, and sacred pilgrimage sites. Departing from Osaka, the tour first travels to Nanki Shirahama, one of the most famous seaside destinations in western Japan. Visitors enjoy free time at Toretore Market, one of the largest seafood markets in the region, where they can taste fresh seafood and explore local specialties. The tour then visits Sandanbeki Cave, a dramatic sea cave carved by the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon, travelers explore Shirahama’s most iconic coastal landscapes, including the rock formations of Senjojiki, the white sands of Shirarahama Beach, and the scenic Engetsuto Island, before staying overnight in Katsuura.

On the second day, after breakfast, the journey continues to Daimonzaka, part of the UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, where guests can walk along the ancient stone steps surrounded by towering cedar trees while experiencing traditional Heian-period costumes. The tour then visits Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and the magnificent Nachi Falls, a sacred waterfall revered in Shinto belief. 13:30 Nanki Shirahama
Sandanbeki Cave (about 40 minutes / entrance fee 1,500 yen, not included)

Sandanbeki is a dramatic natural cliff and sea cave formed by over a thousand years of ocean erosion. According to legend, it once served as a hidden base for the Kumano naval pirates during the Heian period. Visitors descend by elevator directly into the cave, where they can witness the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the rocks. The damp stone walls reflect the lights, creating an atmosphere like entering a hidden world. Inside the cave, lighting installations and a small shrine combine natural forces with a sense of mystery and history, offering a unique exploration experience.

Highlights

Spectacular Cliffs
Sandanbeki is a massive coastal cliff about 50 meters high and 2 kilometers long. From the viewing area, you can overlook the roaring ocean and strong sea winds, making it one of Shirahama’s most famous coastal landscapes.

Mysterious Sea Cave
A vertical elevator takes visitors 36 meters down into the rock to reach the sea cave. According to legend, this cave once served as a secret base for the Kumano naval forces. Inside, the sound of crashing waves and the moist rock walls create a thrilling, adventurous atmosphere.

Hidden Shrine
Within the cave stands a shrine dedicated to Muro Daibenzaiten, where people pray for safe voyages, love, and prosperity. The dim lighting adds a ritual-like and mysterious atmosphere.

What to Do
• Take the vertical elevator down into the cave
• Optional souvenir photo service available
• Walk along the illuminated, non-slip paths to explore rock formations, ocean tides, shrine areas, and wind tunnels
• Capture dramatic photos of waves crashing at the cave entrance
• Outside the cave, there are also observation decks, foot baths, and cafés where visitors can relax briefly.
14:30 Senjojiki・Shirahama Beach・Engetu Island
Senjojiki Rock Plateau (about 30 minutes)
Facing the Pacific Ocean, Senjojiki is a vast rock plateau that resembles a thousand tatami mats spread across the coastline. With sea winds blowing and waves splashing against the rocks, the landscape feels as if only the rocks and the ocean remain, quietly breathing together. Walking across the ripple-like patterns carved into the stone, each line tells the story of centuries of natural erosion. In the evening, the setting sun paints the rocks in shades of gold and crimson, while the endless ocean stretches before your eyes. Simply standing here allows you to feel the deep pulse of the earth.

Shirarahama – A World-Class White Sand Beach (about 50 minutes)
Shirarahama Beach is one of Japan’s most famous coastal destinations and is a sister beach of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. The 620-meter stretch of brilliant white sand is incredibly fine and soft, glowing under the sunlight. The water is crystal clear and deep blue, while gentle waves roll onto the shore, carrying the refreshing scent of the sea. Visitors can stroll barefoot along the soft sand or relax on a beach chair while enjoying the warm sunlight and ocean breeze. At sunset, the sky turns shades of orange and pink, transforming Shirarahama into a dreamlike seaside scene.

Detective Conan Filming Location – Engetsuto Island (about 30 minutes)
Engetsuto Island is a small offshore island famous for the perfectly round hole naturally formed in its center. Surrounded by sea and sky, this hollow “stone moon” appears to float peacefully on the water, like a mysterious treasure left by nature. During certain evenings, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the hole in the island, shining through it and casting a golden glow across the ocean. In that moment, time seems to slow down, and the breathtaking view becomes an unforgettable memory.
Around 18:30 Arrival at the hotel (Katsuura)

9:00 Departure from the hotel
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will begin a pleasant day of sightseeing.
 9:30 Daimonsaka
Daimonzaka (about 60 minutes, including costume experience)
Daimonzaka is one of the most important ancient pilgrimage paths leading to Kumano Nachi Taisha and is considered one of the most representative stone-paved routes of the Kumano Kodo. The path is about 600 meters long with 267 stone steps, lined with towering cedar trees that have stood for over a thousand years, forming a magnificent green tunnel through time. As you walk along the ancient path, the only sounds are the wind rustling through the cedar branches and the echo of footsteps on the stone steps, creating a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. In autumn, the path is covered with vibrant red leaves, while rainy days transform it into a misty, poetic landscape beloved by photographers and pilgrims alike.

Heian Period Costume Experience (included)
Dress in elegant Heian-period traditional clothing and walk slowly along the historic stone path of Daimonzaka, surrounded by ancient cedar forests. As the sleeves and hems of the garments sway gently in the breeze, it feels as if you have traveled back a thousand years, becoming one of the noble pilgrims of ancient Japan. Every step reveals a new scene, every stone step echoes history. The quiet cedar forest and the ancient pathway create a unique atmosphere where history and nature intertwine, leaving you with a memorable and distinctly Japanese experience.

Kumano Nachi Taisha (about 60 minutes)
As one of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano), Kumano Nachi Taisha has long been the final destination for pilgrims traveling the Kumano Kodo. The vermilion shrine buildings stand quietly within the lush mountains, expressing both solemnity and beauty. Climbing the stone steps toward the shrine feels like entering the ancient mythological world of Japan.

Nachi Falls (about 60 minutes)
With a height of 133 meters, Nachi Falls cascades down the cliff like a white ribbon descending from the heavens. The thunderous sound of water creates a powerful presence, making it not only a masterpiece of nature but also a sacred symbol in Shinto belief. Beside the waterfall stands Hiro Shrine, where the waterfall itself is worshipped as the deity. Standing before the falls and offering a quiet prayer, visitors can feel the spiritual energy and refreshing purity of this sacred place.
