For most visitors in mid-summer, the most iconic sight at Kifune Shrine is the "Kawadoko"—platforms built over the flowing stream. The tradition of Kawadoko dates back to the Momoyama period (1573-1603), originally starting as elevated banquet seating on the Kamo River known as "Takayuka." Later, the Kifune area began building seats over the Kifune River; since these seats are low and close to the water, they are called "Kawadoko" (meaning "riverbed floor"). Dedicated to the deity of water, the shrine offers a unique "Water Fortune" (Mizu-ura Mikuji). After picking a blank fortune slip, you place it on the sacred water to reveal the hidden text. This self-service experience costs 200 JPY. Don't worry if you can't read Japanese—simply scan the QR code on the slip to get translations in multiple languages.
