A natural cliff and sea erosion cave carved by waves over thousands of years. Legend says it was a hiding place for the "Kumano Navy" pirates during the Heian period. Take the elevator deep into the cave to experience the powerful waves of the Pacific Ocean up close. The damp, reflective rock walls create a mysterious atmosphere where nature meets history.
▼ Highlights
Cliff Spectacle: Sandanbeki is a 50-meter-high, 2-kilometer-long cliff. The view from the top is breathtaking, with strong sea breezes and crashing waves, making it a top scenic spot in Shirahama.
Mysterious Sea Cave: Descend 36 meters underground by elevator into the cave where the "Kumano Navy" allegedly hid. The roaring tide and damp walls provide a thrilling adventure.
Hidden Shrine: The cave houses the "Muro Daibenzaiten," a shrine for maritime safety, love, and wealth. The dim lighting creates a sacred atmosphere.
▼ How to Enjoy:
Take the vertical elevator down to the cave.
Photo service is available; purchasing photos is optional.
Walk along the illuminated path with non-slip facilities to see the rock walls, tide, shrine, and blowholes.
Capture the spectacular sight of waves hitting the cave entrance.
Outside the cave, enjoy the observation deck, footbath, and cafe.
A vast expanse of giant rocks spreads out like thousands of tatami mats along the Pacific coast. With the sea breeze blowing and waves splashing, it feels as if only the breath of the rocks and the ocean remains. Walking on the wave-like folds of the rock plateau, every texture is a carving of time, and every sound of the waves is a whisper of nature. At sunset, the rocks turn golden-red, and as you stand on the smooth, weathered stones overlooking the endless sea, you can truly feel the deep heartbeat of the Earth.
As the sister beach of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, Shirarahama features a 620-meter stretch of pristine white sand that glistens like milk under the sun. The crystal-clear blue waters and gentle waves carry the salty scent of the sea and the passion of midsummer. Stroll along the soft sand or simply relax on a beach chair, letting the sunlight soak into your skin as the sea breeze and light gently embrace you. At dusk, as the sky turns orange and pink, Shirarahama becomes a dreamy coastal masterpiece, making you want to do nothing but drift away here all day long.
Engetsu-to is the iconic symbol of Shirahama, officially known as "Takashima." It is famous for the sea-eroded hole in its center, which resembles a full moon—hence the name "Engetsu" (Full Moon). It is a renowned sunset spot where, during certain times of the year, the setting sun aligns perfectly within the central hole. Set against the backdrop of the Pacific waves and evening glow, this "pearl of the sea" creates a serene and romantic atmosphere.
