Hidden in a corner of the Yufuin Onsen town in Oita, this mini European-style village feels like a world from Hayao Miyazaki’s films—pointed rooftops, vine-covered paths, and owls and cats standing guard in silence. The air is filled with a sense of fantasy and healing. Here, you can encounter shops themed around Peter Rabbit, witches, and fairies, pick out handicrafts and desserts, or interact with small animals in cat cafes and rabbit houses. It feels like stepping into a scene from Howl's Moving Castle or Kiki's Delivery Service.
This lake is not large in area, but it is known as the "Mirror of the Soul of Yufuin" due to its unique morning mist and seasonal scenery. The lake water is formed by the convergence of fresh springs and hot springs, making the water temperature relatively high. It is most charming during autumn and winter mornings—mist rises from the lake surface like a spiritual dreamscape from Spirited Away, golden light ripples slightly on the water, and the scales of swimming fish reflect the sunlight, which is why it was named "Lake Kinrin" (Golden Scale Lake).
Mt. Yufu towers over Yufuin in Oita Prefecture and is known as the "Fuji of Bungo" for its perfectly symmetrical twin-peak shape. It also has a cute nickname: Matcha Mountain. Viewed from a distance, the entire mountain is covered in thick grass and vegetation, lush green in all seasons, looking like a massive, vibrant matcha mousse cake that makes you want to take a bite.
▼ Sagiridai Observatory
Driving along the winding mountain road toward the Sagiridai Observatory, a breathtaking panoramic landscape unfolds: grassy slopes spread out on both sides, with the perfectly symmetrical twin peaks of Mt. Yufu rising in the distance.
▼ Mt. Yufu Trailhead
Arriving at the Mt. Yufu trailhead, you don't have to challenge the full summit. We recommend a "micro-hike" of about ten minutes: walk slowly along the starting path, surrounded by tall trees and mossy stone paths. Sunlight filters through the leaves in dappled patterns, the sound of wind through the trees and birds chirping fills the air, and the moist, cool atmosphere feels like a secret forest.
Don't want to hike? No problem! Looking up from below the trailhead, the layers of greenery look like a giant matcha cake, and you are like a traveler from Lilliput standing at its base—any photo you take will be dreamy. As the breeze blows, the grass sways gently, as if fine powdered sugar has been sprinkled over the matcha.
PS: If it is raining and the road is slippery, hiking is not recommended; taking photos at the foot of the mountain is suggested.
Step into Beppu's Umi Jigoku, and an incredibly turquoise hot spring immediately catches your eye. It looks like an intense, vivid blue ocean, yet it emits curling white steam with water temperatures reaching 98°C. The blue is dreamlike and breathtakingly beautiful. Surrounded by Japanese-style gardens and crimson pillars, the combination of turquoise, red, white mist, and greenery creates a hellish yet mystical beauty. It is nature's mysterious palette and the most charming of the Beppu Eight Hells.
(Umi Jigoku Entrance Fee: 500 JPY, at your own expense)
Lake Shidaka is a volcanic lake located in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, within the Aso-Kuju National Park at an elevation of approximately 600 meters. While not a massive landmark, its quiet and beautiful natural scenery makes it a charming "Highland Pearl" of the Beppu area.
Scenery and Friendly Swans:
The most enchanting aspect of Lake Shidaka is its tranquil waters and the friendly swans and koi fish. The swans are not afraid of people, allowing for close observation. If you have food, you can enjoy the fun of feeding them. Additionally, it is an excellent spot to view the twin peaks of Mt. Yufu and Mt. Tsurumi.
